AI Compiler Engineer – New Grad / Early Career (Automotive SoC)
Dallas, TX / San Jose, California, United States
Engineering – Artificial Intelligence / Full-Time / On-Site
Role Summary
As an AI Compiler Engineer on the Renesas HPC team, you will be responsible for driving compiler and code generation technologies that unlock the full compute potential of Renesas next-generation automotive System-on-Chip platforms, including advanced 3 nm silicon for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Your work will directly impact how AI workloads — from perception and sensor fusion to in-vehicle assistants and advanced driver assistance — are translated into highly optimized, safe, and power-efficient execution on Renesas hardware. This role is designed for exceptional newly minted engineers — PhDs and strong MS graduates — who want to build a career in AI compiler engineering at one of the world's leading automotive semiconductor companies. Visa sponsorship is available for international students graduating from U.S. universities. One thing we're especially excited about: if you're someone who uses AI in everything you do — not just building AI compilers, but actually using the latest AI tools, agents, and models to do your own work faster and better — we want to hear from you. That mindset is a big deal to us.
What You'll Do
Develop and implement compiler components for AI model inference on automotive NPUs under mentorship of senior engineers. Implement graph passes: operator fusion, constant folding, memory layout optimization, quantization-aware rewrites. Write and optimize C++ and Python code within the compiler pipeline (parsing, IR transformations, backend passes). Benchmark and profile model performance on simulator or hardware targets. Contribute to open-source compiler or AI toolchain efforts (MLIR, LLVM, TVM, PyTorch). Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and architectural decision-making.
What We're Looking For
PhD or MS in Computer Science, EE, or related field (PhD preferred; strong MS candidates from top programs considered). 0-3 years of industry or research experience in compilers, ML systems, or AI accelerator software. Solid foundation in compiler theory (IR, data flow analysis, optimization passes, code generation). Strong C++ and Python skills. Familiarity with at least one of: MLIR, LLVM, TVM, PyTorch internals, ONNX. Research or coursework in deep learning, ML systems, or computer architecture. Recent AI experience is essential — must know LLMs, transformers, or modern generative AI (not just classical ML). Open to relocation to Austin, TX or Dallas, TX. International students needing visa sponsorship are welcome to apply.
Nice to Have
Published research or thesis in compilers, AI systems, or hardware-software co-design. GitHub portfolio with compiler or AI project contributions. Experience at a research lab (e.g., SLICE Lab, NVIDIA Research, AMD, Google Brain, Meta FAIR, Qualcomm AI Research). Automotive, embedded, or safety-critical systems background. LLM or agentic AI experience. You actively use AI tools (coding assistants, agents, LLMs) in your own day-to-day work — not just build them.
Impact & Why This Role Matters
Renesas' Gen5 R-Car automotive SoC lineup, including flagship 3 nm devices like the R-Car X5H, is among the first highly integrated multi-domain automotive SoCs built on advanced 3 nm process technology, designed to run ADAS, IVI, gateway, and next-gen SDV workloads on a centralized platform. These platforms deliver high AI performance (e.g., multi-hundreds of TOPS), scalable chiplet-based acceleration, and power efficiency tailored for electrified and autonomous vehicles while meeting stringent functional safety standards. An AI Compiler Engineer enables this hardware vision by ensuring that state-of-the-art AI models and computational kernels are efficiently mapped to the silicon fabric — directly enhancing performance, reducing latency and energy, and accelerating software adoption in automotive ecosystems where compute efficiency and safety are paramount.
